Kid’s Min Staff has been reading, recalculating, and rededicating our mission and vision to the children in kid’s ministry. We have jumped into fall kickoff with new classroom assignments and then realized how fast those classes are already growing. With growth of each class comes a need for adult leaders to come and help us teach the Word of God. I would like to ask you to pray about your calling to serve in Kid’s Ministry and we have a variety of ways you can serve.

It is our goal to teach the Word of God each week using methods that stimulate all learning styles. Elementary offers a large group experience, which includes a fun icebreaker game, worship time with the Worship Team, and a skit before we move into the weekly bible video (link attached below). In our skit we discuss the timeline in which the bible event took place, (old or new testament), the units key passage, and a big picture question. We send home what is called the “Big Picture Card” for you to review with your child and to help reinforce the bible story just taught.

After large group, each grade will go back to their designated area to review the bible story, learn the key passage, and explore the main point through various activities. Our group leaders find this time to be of great value as they really get to build relationships with the students in their group. The best way for this to happen is continuity, a committed leader who is available at least two times a month, so that children feel valued and a part of a larger group than just general attendance.

Early Education Classes offer a similar structure with music, an age appropriate bible story, snack, and two activities to reinforce the story throughout the week. These activities are preplanned and available in our nursery all the way up to kindergarten.

Why do I share this with you, you may ask? In order for you the parent to “buy into” the value of Sunday School, it is important for you to know our heart and why we do what we do. We feel that the 75 minutes a week that we have with your child is valuable and we want to partner with you as you take what was taught and expand on it during the week. The “buy in” happens when parents support the mission. That happens when parents ask questions about their activity or craft, Big Picture Card, worship with their child in their arena, and participate in Kid’s Ministry by serving.

Lastly, we are available to answer any questions you may have about Kid’s Ministry by phone, email, or in person on Sunday between services. Please do not hesitate contacting me, introducing yourself, and sharing your desires for your child.

Have a great September and I hope to see you in Kid’s Ministry!

Emily Hughes

Emily has been attending New Life since the Fall of 2013. She currently serves on Sunday mornings in our Early Education department with our 4-year olds, or where ever she is needed.
She has been serving our Kids Ministry for around 2 years. She has always served in Kids Ministry at her previous churches as well, as she loves working with kids and says they teach her so much.
In her free time she loves to walk on the beach, read and spend time with her friends and family, which includes her 3 teen aged boys.

When she was a kid she wanted to be a firefighter because she thought the red trucks and water hose were cool, and even thought about becoming a Doctor. When we gave Emily the choice between being invisible or being able to read people’s minds, she chose to be invisible. “It would be fun to be able to not be seen sometimes and I would probably get a headache being able to read everyone’s mind”, she says. And if she could only eat just one food for the rest of her life, it would be pizza!

We are so thankful for Emily. She comes on Sunday with a smile on her face and is always happy to be here serving! Her heart for the kids of New Life is evident and she is a true blessing to all those around her.

Baptism weekend proved itself to be an amazing celebration as children, students, and adults made a public commitment to their faith in Jesus Christ. The entire congregation rejoiced with each person as they were washed clean of their sins and walked out of the water and into their new identity.

Just Sayin’
Being a parent is crazy… I mean, it’s a wonderful blessing and all, but it’s insane. My perspective of mom-hood has changed immensely since having a child…and then another child, and then another. Like, I remember when I worked at Trader Joe’s (pre-children) and I’d see moms come in with their small kids, in their yoga pants with a smile pasted on, shopping mid-day, and I would think, “Gosh, they must have all the time in the world, and they get to exercise too…that’s the coolest. I just want to do that.”

I’ll never forget the face a mom with three children in her grocery cart gave me one time at check out…because now I understand her face completely… I asked her if she worked or stayed home with her kids, and she told me she was home with them, and I said “Wow, that must be so nice!” Then she looked at me with “the face” and said “ya, it’s nice…” I’ll never forget it because now I know what she was telling me without using words…”KID, You just have no idea how tired and exhausted I am and how much work it is to be a mom, but ya, it’s nice, you should try it.”

My friend’s mom told me one time that having small children is much like riding a wave, one second you’re cruising on the top having the time of your life and then BOOM, all of a sudden you’re tumbling in the surf. I liken this to every few moments of my every day. One second all the kids are happy, getting along, telling me they love me even. I’m loving life thinking about how thankful I am, then I run to the restroom — 3 seconds later — small cheddar goldfish EVERYWHERE being stomped into the carpet. Kids are having the best time, and of course, it’s always right after a vacuum sesh. BOOM, now tumbling in the surf. Just like that, over and over again. But you still want to do it because of the love that you feel bursting in your heart when you look at your own child growing up so fast.

I’ve learned that keeping perspective every day as a mom, home or working, changes everything. I saw this on Instagram a while back & loved it…

Early wake ups = Children to love
House to clean = Safe place to live
Laundry = Clothes to wear
Dishes to wash = Food to eat
Crumbs under the table = Family meals
Grocery Shopping = $ to provide for us
Toilets to clean = Indoor plumbing
Lots of noise = People in my life
Endless questions = Kids’ brains growing
Sore and tired in bed = I AM ALIVE!

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Thankfulness is the will of God for us! I pray that whatever you face this day, that you will stop to take a breath, and find things to thank God for. I promise you it will change your day for good, and your life actually!
