  • Visit us on Sundays!!

I remember well what it was like to see the school year come to an end. I would load up my van with camping gear, squirt guns, and pool noodles and pick up my sons that wonderful last day of school. The feeling of freedom from bedtimes, homework, and packed lunches was exhilarating; we were free!

As you find yourselves falling away from your normal routine I want to invite you to continue your Sunday’s with New Life. On Promotion Sunday, (6/11) your child will move up to their next grade. That means that kindergartners will now join us in the Life Center and 6th graders will meet at the Vertex for the 11am service, (they’ll learn more about that at the 6th grade Bonanza on 6/4).

For the 1st through 6th graders, we’ll all be beginning and ending in the Life Center. We will be working with mixed age groups while engaging the children in bible based activities and worship. We would like to ask parents that if you have a Sunday you could give to one of our classes, we could really use you in our team-style teaching one or two Sunday’s this summer. You can sign up in your child’s class or email me at tbognuda@newlifepismo.com for more information.

Our Preschool, Nursery and Kindergarten, students will also move up to their new classes by age, to the classrooms located in rooms 1 through 5 downstairs of the education building. They will enjoy bible stories, music with Florence, and exciting bible based activities that will remind them all week of what was taught, so that they can share with you.

If you find yourself traveling and out of the area during the summer, I want to encourage you to download the Gospel Project App, which will keep you up-to-date on the current memory verse, bible story, and it even has worship music. If that doesn’t work for you, try bringing along a daily devotional that you can share with your children; there a lot of great ones out there based on the ages of your children through Amazon or Lifeway.

Have a blessed summer and I’ll look forward to seeing you in Sunday School, Hume Camp, Vacation Bible School, or one of our Family Movie Nights.

JUNE SPOTLIGHT
Karin Gonzalez

Karin currently serves in our preschool department on Sunday mornings during the 11 am hour. She and her husband have been attending New Life for 11 years; she has served in the Kids Ministry for three. Karin first got involved in Kids Ministry after hearing about a need for volunteers. God laid it on her heart to start subbing; she realized the more she served, the more in love with kids she became and started serving on a regular basis.

Karin has two daughters, Siena, 7 and Naomi, 4. She loves to read non-fiction religious books, bake, and spend time with her family, including helping in her daughter’s classroom. Her favorite team is the college basketball team, Gonzaga; it was named after Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and the team’s motto is, “For the Greater Glory of God!” How cool is that?

When we asked Karin if she would rather read peoples’ minds or be invisible she chose to be invisible as knowing what people think would be too scary. If stranded on a desert island, the two things she would bring are water and another person. If she could only choose one thing that she could eat or drink for the rest of her life, it would be Sushi or Starbucks Caramel Macchiato!

Her favorite scripture is 1Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Karin wants everyone to know this, “If anyone has ever considered helping in Kids Ministry, but aren’t quite sure about it, just do it! You won’t regret it. Give VBS a try and see … God and these beautiful kids will change you!!!”

Karin, thank you for listening to God’s tugging on your heart and stepping forward to serve our littlest ones. We are blessed having you here on the Kids Ministry team and we appreciate you!

Lindley’s Amazing Story

Hi! My name is Lindley Marlene Burrell. I am 8 years old. I was born on November 21, 2008, one month premature at Sierra Vista in San Luis Obispo to my Mom and Dad, Cameron and Rhonda Burrell. I have two awesome older brothers; William 14 and Stephen 11. I loved Gymnastics! I used to go twice a week!!One night in May of 2014, while I was getting dressed for bedtime, I turned to say something to Mom and Dad and I got a really bad pain in my head that dropped me to the ground. I went to the doctor and he ordered some tests. They found out that I had a rare condition called a Chiari Malformation in my brain and that the pain in my head was actually a stroke caused by restricted cerebral spinal fluid flow, and blood flow as a result of this rare condition.

“(Chiari malformation (kee-AH-ree mal-for-MAY-shun) is a condition in which brain tissue extends into your spinal canal. It occurs when part of your skull is abnormally small or misshapen, pressing on your brain and forcing it downward.)”

I was seen by a neurologist, Dr. Cheshier at Stanford University on June 20th and scheduled for surgery on July 2, 2014. It was determined that my Chiari was 11mm. What this means is that my cerebellar tonsils extended 11mm below the foramen magnum.

My family was pretty overwhelmed and worried about me and what might happen with or without surgery. We had a LOT of prayers from supporters during this time and it meant a whole lot to all of us.

I had my surgery on July 2nd, 2014 and it was obvious that I was in the best hands right from the beginning because they did a little ultrasound test before they made the incision on my neck and discovered that my arteries were overlapping each other. If they had not discovered this first, they could have accidentally severed one of them and lost me very quickly.

After my surgery was complete, Dr. Cheshier said that part of my brain had already become ischemic, meaning that it had begun to die. He also said we were very lucky to have dicovered it early because I could have had a fatal stroke by the age of 10!

I spent the next 11 days at Stanford’s Lucille Packard children’s hospital recovering from my surgery. I was in ICU for the first 4 days because I was so sick. It was really hard to turn my head because I had a very large incision from the middle of my skull down to C-3 on my neck. My brothers were there to cheer me up and of course my Mom, Dad, my Yaya and my Nana’s were all there to support me. So many people continued to pray for me as well!! I knew with God on my side I was safe.

We have to return to Stanford regularly for check ups. One thing I do love about going to Stanford is that we always stop by the American Girl doll store! I always take a picture next to the star and sometimes I get to buy accessories or outfits for my doll, “Kit Kitteredge.” I picked her because she looked the most like me. We both had short haircuts and blonde hair. Kit went to surgery with me. Nana Gail made sure she had scrubs and Crocs for for the big day! She even got a hospital ID bracelet just like mine! We’ve been through a lot together. Last time we went to Stanford in April) she got a pair of glasses just like the ones I wear for my migraines! We look so cool.

Some of the things I love are spending time with my family, I am so thankful for them! I also really want to be a fashion designer and go to Paris when I grow up. I am very creative and I started out drawing my ideas on paper. I had summer lines and winter lines of clothing all mapped out on paper. Then I started cutting pieces of fabric and making clothes for my Barbies using double-sided tape. But now I have a sewing machine and I’ve been practicing on that! I’m so excited to make this dream a reality! I even designed a fragrance to go with my fashion line! I love music and dancing. I want to continue learning to play the guitar. I like to make bracelets too!

I started coming to church at New Life last September with my Mom, Yaya, and my big brothers and we really enjoy it! In February, my brother Stephen even ran down at the last minute to be baptized and share his faith in Jesus. I really wanted to do it too! I couldn’t wait, so Mom talked to Dani and Gary Sumner and they promised to help me. And they sure did! On Saturday, May 13th, we all put on our wetsuits and headed into the Great Pacific ocean for my special baptism! My teacher, Mrs. Class, and her family were there; Miss Tracy from our youth ministry was there; my whole family and of course, Dani and Gary, and their family! It was such a special day for me. I will never forget it. We celebrated at Yogurt Creations afterward.

I am a bright, happy and loving little girl with the world in front of her and the Lord behind her…there is nothing I cannot do!!
