What a blessing it is to see your child each week in Sunday school. Our staff and volunteer leaders wait with great anticipation at the opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ each week. There is no time like the present to engage them in conversation about what Jesus taught and then died for…. For us! He made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can know God and have access to Him. I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful that nothing separates me from God’s love, forgiveness, and desire to be with me.

Each week we plan opportunities to do just that! In October not only are we planning for Sunday school but also we will be hosting Fall Fest ’17 on a NEW day, Saturday October 28th. This year’s Fall Fest ’17 is sure to be a great time for the kids in our community, but we can’t do it without volunteers. OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT
Florence Pope

She currently serves in both the 9:00 and 11:00 hour as our Music Resource Leader for our three and four-year olds. Florence has been at New Life church for 42 years, and serving in the Kids Ministry for 40 of those years. Talk about a faithful servant! As if serving both services each Sunday doesn’t keep her busy enough, she also volunteers in our library in between services, as she says she has a love for reading as well as kids. Florence has also helped out with Good News Club, which is an after school program that meets weekly on school campuses, sharing the gospel of Christ with elementary aged children. She received Christ as a 10 yr old little girl, and sees the value of ministering to young kids which is the reason she got involved in serving in Kids Ministry.

Florence has one grown son. She wanted to be an Occupational Therapist when she was a kid, and always wanted to learn how to play the keyboard. When asked if she would rather be invisible or be able to read people’s minds, she chose to be invisible, and thought that would be much more exciting, and a lot less scary than reading people’s minds and seeing what they are thinking!

Her current favorite scripture is found in Phil 4:19. Although, that changes from time to time for different seasons in her life. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

If stranded on a desert island, and could only take two things along, Florence would take her Bible and her Auto-harp (which is what she just happens to have with her each and every Sunday too). I asked her if she could only eat one food for the rest of her life, what would that be? She said that would be too hard to choose because she would get tired of eating just one thing forever. She did mention however, that she loves her poppy seed muffins, and loves grabbing one on Sunday mornings in between services.

Florence, you are a true gem! We appreciate your heart for the kids of New Life, and how you not only faithfully serve each and every Sunday morning, but how you show up with a smile on your face which comes from the joy in your heart! Thank you for making sure each child that comes here, leaves knowing they are loved! We sure appreciate you!

Congratulations Ezekiel Paul Martin and Joshua Landon!!

Just Sayin’

Before you had kids, do you remember keeping a mental list of all the things you would NEVER do once you had a kid? For example: crying children on an aircraft. Before kids, I thought “Ugh, can you please shut your kid up I’m trying to sleep? When I have kids of my own, I won’t let them cry on an airplane. I’ll give them suckers or something to keep them quiet.” Well here’s the news folks, my husband and I flew with our 3 children ages 3 and under across the country and it was PAINFUL! Our last flight was four hours long, and we had 2 out of 3 kids screaming the E N T I R E time (not exaggerating). Like kicking and spinning on the ground–2 year old exhausted tantrum–kind of screaming. Suckers were powerless. The people around us were not understanding at all, as a matter of fact, when the plane finally landed, everyone behind us dashed off of the plane ahead of us avoiding eye contact at all cost. I felt so embarrassed, exhausted and defeated even though I’d never see those people again. Thank Goodness.

Having kids changes things, it changes you. I find myself much more understanding and less critical and judgmental because I know very well now that it could all happen to me just the same…
Isaiah 40:11 says, “He [God] will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” I love this beautiful picture of the tender attention of the shepherd to his flock. It tells me that God knows mothers need special care while they are tending to their young. God understands we need more grace, and gentleness for this season we are in of diapers, toddler tantrums, poop in the tub (just happened while writing this), etc. And He will take care of us and feed us. He will carry those who are unable to walk and lead us gently in this time with young. What a comfort!

I’ll leave you with this thought: if you are tired, discouraged and feeling like you can’t walk today, know that Christ is able to scoop you up in His arms and carry you through this day. Ah. Relief.

Trusting Him A Day At A Time,

Your Neighborhood Mom

  • Bible Lessons: Early Childhood

  • KidsMin Worship Team Update
  • Visit us on Sundays!!

As we move into November, the month of thankfulness, I am reminded that we are to be thankful at all times. I began 2017 with the goal of writing down what I was thankful for each day. It didn’t take long before I fell away from that goal, becoming absorbed in the day-to-day and struggling to take the time to acknowledge what I was thankful for. Feeling guilty for this failed resolution isn’t my goal in sharing, but rather it helps me to look back and note when I started to become more cynical and less thankful. I realized that it is easier for me to focus on what isn’t working, then what is working because we are constantly reminded of what’s failing.

Well, I am thankful that our God gives us an opportunity each new day to start over. Each morning when I wake up one of the first things I see is the scripture hanging in my room from Psalm 143:8 that says, “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love”. If you are in a season where it is difficult to be thankful, I want to encourage you to open your bible and read the promises of God’s unfailing love for us.

Well, I have been given a fresh and renewed spirit of thankfulness this month as I have been able to spend time with Dana Hutsko. After many conversations with our Kid’s Min staff and Dana, it became apparent that we needed to move towards 2018 with fresh lenses. It became very obvious that we needed Dana to help Kid’s Min move forward and we believed that God sent her to us to do just that! Therefore, New Life Kid’s Ministry would like to welcome Dana Hutsko to our staff.

Dana will support those serving in Sunday school classrooms from preschool through sixth grade. Dana adds over 17 years of experience in Christian Education and her passion is leading volunteers to teach and reach children. She will be spending the next several weeks getting to know your children as well as enlisting new faithful leaders to serve where no one has.

Along with hiring Dana, Kid’s Min has also made a few personnel changes which include Melanie Borum making Worship Team, Elementary Large Group, 60 Seconds, and special events her full time job which includes a new title of Worship Coordinator.

Tami Lundquist, who has done an amazing job serving as Volunteer Coordinator, will take over as Elementary Coordinator overseeing curriculum for first through sixth grade and will continue as the weekday Childcare Coordinator that supports childcare for weekday/night ministries.

It is our goal to bring your child the best Sunday school experience possible. To bring them the Word of God and to show them how it can be applied to their daily lives. We want to encourage your child to worship while still having fun at church. This doesn’t happen without intention, so if you are interested in helping us lead children with intentional practices, please contact Dana to get more information.

NOVEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Linda Hancock

Linda is on our Kids Ministry Prayer Team and also comes on Monday’s to help put Sunday materials away and helps keep our Resource Room nice and tidy. Besides helping in Kids Ministry, she also helps with the Funeral Ministry, and two ‘New Normal’ groups, which provide fellowship and encouragement to woman who have lost their spouses, PLUS volunteers once a week in the church office! Wow! Linda, you are amazing! She has taught Sunday school since she was a teenager, and currently has a bible study in her home.

Linda and her late husband have been attending New Life since 2001. She has 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She loves reading and watching Sports, especially the Rams and the Lakers. Linda has even been a part of 3 victory parades after the Lakers won the championship game! How fun!

When she was a child, she wanted to be a lawyer or have a career in politics (behind the scenes). However, she ended up becoming a teacher and worked locally for the Lucia Mar School District for 27 years.

The scripture that Linda clings to is found in Proverbs. “He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children, it will be a refuge”. Proverbs 14:26

Linda said she is grateful to be a part of these ministries here at New Life. We are blessed to have her serve in all these areas. Her kind, gentle spirit is a true blessing to us, and we are so thankful for her. Thank you Linda for faithfully serving over the years in Kids Ministry as well as the other ministries here at New Life. We pray we can find more volunteers with hearts to serve like you.

Just Sayin’
Do you ever judge the success of your day by getting the dishes done or the laundry folded? I do, and those are the good days. Most days I just feel like I run in circles and put out fires, and then move quickly to the next one to put it out. Have you ever heard the saying “Cleaning your house when kids are home is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos”? Terrible visual and now I want Oreos, but how true is that?! I find myself frustrated often because I can never finish what I started, and if I do finish one thing, by the time I do that another thing is destroyed or spilled all over the place.

My job feels pointless. I feel exhausted and taken advantage of. Unappreciated. Defeated. Even when I feel like I’m doing something good that my child usually wants, like cutting up her pizza, but then she screams at me because she wanted it whole this time…but you know that if you gave it to her whole she would cry and ask you to cut it up. What’s the deal with that anyways? Are they trying to kill us?

I know that I’m not alone. Parenting is tough. It takes energy I often feel I don’t have. How do we get through these hard days? I know it’s a season and every “old” person on the street tells you to enjoy it because it goes fast and you’ll miss it…

I think it comes down to purpose. Who are we doing this for and why? Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Is it just me or do your kids act like your little human masters? Ha! That was a side note.

It’s easy to get stuck in the mundane, but having the perspective that I am serving my family as unto the Lord should change my attitude about cleaning the messes and all of the above. My prayer for you as you read this is that you would have a fresh energy to serve your kids and spouse as unto the Lord and that you would know that He is pleased by you, and He sees you, even when no one else does. Our kids are growing up fast. Every day is precious, and God is using the time we spend with them to grow them into who He wants them to be. Our work is not in vain. Keep on keeping on my fellow parents!

DECEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Dana Hutsko

Dana Hutsko is the newest addition to New Life Kids Ministry, and we could not be more excited about it! She is serving as our Volunteer Coordinator from birth though 6th grade, and is here every Sunday. She has an amazing heart for people and kids, and has already brought so much to this ministry. We thought it would be fun to get to know her a bit more, so we asked her a few questions about herself.
Here goes:

Dana, David and their four children, Lexy age 15, Drew 13, Xavier 12 and Nelly 10, have been here for a little over four months now. She has been involved here in our Kids Ministry for about five weeks, however, Dana has worked with kids since she was 10 years old! It was then that she started teaching Sunday School, and knew then that God had given her a passion to work with kids. She also became a nanny for a family of five kids at the age of 13 and stayed with them until she went off to college. Dana has a degree in Director of Education with an emphasis in Early Education and Children’s Ministry. When we asked her what other areas she has served in before Kids Ministry, she said she is the Official Consultant for Date Nights for Pastor David. 🙂

In her free time, she likes to spend time with her family at the beach or park. They also love having dance parties in the living room, playing games together or just snuggling up and watching movies together.

She loves to watch and play sports, specifically Softball, Volleyball and Soccer. She loves to watch Ohio State Buckeyes, and loves a good upset when the underdogs beat the best team.

When asked if she had to choose between reading people’s minds or being invisible, she would reluctantly choose reading people’s mind, however she would really like to be able to teleport and go wherever she wanted, whenever, and with whomever she chooses. She said as a child, she wanted to be a Doctor or a Teacher, and her favorite dessert is chocolate chip cookies.

When Dana was a child, her grandmother read her Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” and taught her to live it everyday, thus the reason it has become her favorite verse.

We are blessed to have Dana as a part of our team. Her passion for the kids and families of New Life is evident to all! We look forward to all that she has yet to bring to this ministry and New Life.

Wanna know more about our holidays at New Life?

Text “season” to 805-979-2003

Just Sayin’
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… but also the busiest, most stressful and financially taxing time of the year, am I alone in this? I love Christmas time, and it really is the best to relive it through the eyes of my children again…Just the wonder of it all! But I find myself overwhelmed a lot with an ever-growing to do list before Christmas is here.

Yesterday I was feeling super overwhelmed, it was a hard mom-day with the kids. There was a point of time — like the hungry lunch/right before naps time — when I lost it because they were all crying for something different and I yelled (I mean, slightly raised my voice and said), “Stop whining!! There is only ONE of me and there are THREE of you, so I can only help ONE of you at a time! PLEASE, all of you, BE QUIET!”

They all got quiet for 2 seconds because they saw that I was serious but then my 5 year old pipes up and asks, “But didn’t you want THREE of us even though there is only ONE of you?” Ha! That calmed me down and made me laugh anyways.

What I am finding out along this parenting journey is that I have to plan a time to rest because life keeps rolling faster and faster if you let it. God showed us the model in creation: worked for 6 days and then rested for THE WHOLE 7th DAY! What if we actually did that and gave ourselves a day or even a half of a day to stop, and recoup and rejuvenate?

Genesis 2:3 says, “And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.” It’s also one of the 10 Commandments to us to keep the Sabbath Day holy! I am challenged by this. Even if there is still tons to do (there always is and will be), take a time out for yourself to refocus and get refreshed and trust God that He will provide for what we leave undone while we take the time to rest. I know that if we do this, God will bless that time, because the Bible says so!

My hope for you (and me) during this Holiday season is that we would be intentional and take the time to rest and take in what this season is all about instead of getting lost in the buying and cooking and festivities. Even though those are all good things, the “gooder” thing is to pick Jesus and renew our souls in the midst of busy. I don’t think we’ll regret this.

So Happy Resting my friends & fellow parents!

Trusting Him A Day At A Time,

Your Neighborhood Mom
